Fire broke out at the house of Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion deputy minister Kudakwashe Mnangagwa on Friday night, a few days after police said they were investigating security breaches at the property.
The deputy minister, who is President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s son, reported an incident to the the police that mysterious intruders broke into his house and left empty gun cartridges close to his bedroom door last week.
Police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the cause of the fire was still being investigated.
“ZRP confirms that investigations are currently underway in connection with a fire incident, which occurred at the house of the deputy minister for Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion, Honourable Kudakwashe David Mnangagwa on 28th June 2024 at 2330 hours,” Nyathi said.
Nyathi last week said investigations were being conducted in connection with a report of criminal acts at Mnangagwa’s residence.
Accordig to reports, Mnangagwa, who was watching TV with his wife, called the two police officers guarding his property after hearing unusual noises coming from the ceiling.
The policemen surveyed the house and the perimeter wall, but saw nothing suspicious.
Mnangagwa is said to have called the officers a second time and asked them to check the roof where they allegedly found a bag loaded with some of his possessions, including torn documents, two Apple MacBook laptops, and a MacBook iPad, all of which appeared to have been deliberately damaged.

The items had been taken from Mnangagwa’s bedroom.
Mnangagwa also informed the police officers that his gun, a 9mm Beretta pistol with 15 live cartridges, was missing, along with US$500 cash that had been in the bag.
The intruder then went to the garage and cut the driver’s headrest of Mnangagwa’s parked Land Rover Defender.
In the second incident, on June 25, an intruder reportedly left six cartridges — three outside Mnangagwa’s main bedroom door and three on the lawn outside his house.
The police retrieved the three cartridges within two metres of the door and another three on the lawn outside the property.
