Rugby world mourns Jani

During his tenure as ZRU president, Jani was instrumental in bringing stability and growth to the organisation.

THE Zimbabwean rugby community is in mourning following the tragic passing of Aaron Jani, the former Zimbabwe Rugby Union (ZRU) president, who lost his battle with cancer on Wednesday at the age of 51.

Jani, a revered figure in Zimbabwean rugby, was not only a former national team player but also a dedicated administrator who left an indelible mark on the sport.

His death has sent shockwaves through the rugby world, with tributes pouring in from across the nation and beyond.

In a statement released on Wednesday evening, the ZRU expressed its profound grief: “It is with profound sadness that the Zimbabwe Rugby Union and the rugby community mourn the loss of our esteemed former president, Aaron Jani.

“Aaron was a towering figure in our sport — a leader, a visionary, and a passionate advocate for rugby in Zimbabwe and beyond. Jani was a Sable, living for the game, and his passing marks one of the saddest days in Zimbabwe Rugby.”

During his tenure as ZRU president, Jani was instrumental in bringing stability and growth to the organisation.

First elected in 2017, he secured a second term in 2021, which concluded last year.

Under his leadership, Zimbabwean rugby experienced significant progress, particularly in the development of the Sables, junior rugby, and women’s rugby.

The ZRU statement continued: “His unwavering dedication during his tenure as ZRU president brought stability, growth, and pride to our community, leaving an indelible mark on the Sables, junior rugby, and women’s rugby development.

“On behalf of the entire ZRU family, we extend our deepest sympathies to Aaron’s loved ones during this difficult time. His legacy will forever inspire us as we continue to build on the foundation he so tirelessly strengthened.”

The Milton Old Boys Association also paid tribute to Jani, describing him as a “colossal figure” in the sport.

In a heartfelt post on their social media pages, they wrote: “The rugby family is reeling in shock and sadness today as news spreads of the passing of Aaron Jani, a true giant of the sport.

“As a former president of the Zimbabwe Rugby Union and treasurer of Rugby Africa, Jani left an indelible mark on the game, but his impact went far beyond the boardroom. On the pitch, Jani was a force to be reckoned with, earning his stripes as a formidable player for Old Miltonians and Zimbabwe's beloved Sables.

“His impressive skills and dedication earned him a revered place in the rugby community, and his legacy continues to inspire future generations of players.”

His love for rugby was evident from an early age. He attended Milton High School and Christian Brothers College in Bulawayo, where he honed his skills and developed the work ethic that would define his remarkable career.

Aaron Jani’s passing leaves a void in Zimbabwean rugby, but his contributions to the sport will never be forgotten. His legacy as a player, leader, and visionary will continue to inspire the rugby community for years to come.
