The 2024 Mercedes-Benz V-Class is sheer pleasure

The V-Class has long been a top choice for families and high-end businesses, celebrated for its spaciousness, comfort, and adaptability.

THE latest model of the Mercedes-Benz V-Class, particularly the V300d Exclusive variant, is nothing short of stunning.

It is clear that the V Models are becoming a fashionable choice in Zimbabwe, continuing the brand''s tradition of excellence in the luxury van market.

Although their presence on our roads is increasing, it is unfortunate that they are primarily grey imports, not available through the local dealership. I recently had the pleasure of driving one in South Africa.

The V-Class has long been a top choice for families and high-end businesses, celebrated for its spaciousness, comfort, and adaptability.

The 2024 update of the flagship Exclusive model aims to surpass the impressive standards set by previous versions.

Design

The exterior of the new V-Class V300d Exclusive features a striking and recognisable design, highlighted by a prominent radiator grille and sophisticated adaptive Multibeam-LED headlights that enhance both visibility and aesthetics.

The classic Mercedes-Benz star on the hood adds a touch of timeless elegance, while the revamped rear bumper and LED taillights create a seamless, contemporary appearance.

This model also boasts an AMG spoiler lip on the tailgate, tinted rear windows, and chrome side skirts.

The addition of 19-inch "Monobloc" light alloy wheels (which I find quite appealing with their retro flair) amplifies the van's commanding presence.

However, if you prefer a more traditional look, you can opt for a different wheel design at no additional cost, as demonstrated on our test model.

These new Monobloc wheels certainly exude exclusivity, though some might argue they do not perfectly match the overall design. With seven exquisite paint options available, including fresh hues like Kalahari Gold Metallic and Sodalite Blue Metallic, the V-Class radiates the luxury that its price suggests.

Everywhere we went, we attracted attention, with people likely speculating about the celebrities behind the tinted windows!

Entering the V-Class feels like stepping into a high-end lounge. Expertly designed with premium materials, the interior showcases a stunning instrument panel with two 12.3-inch widescreen displays, set against an elegant open-pore wood finish.

The steering wheel, along with its satellite controls, elevates the experience beyond the multi-spoke designs typical of vehicles like the latest C-Class.

An ambient lighting system with 64 colour choices allows passengers to create the ideal atmosphere for any trip.

Does it drive like a bus?

Absolutely not.

The standard layout comfortably seats six passengers, with seats that can pivot to foster a lounge-like setting.

For those desiring an extra touch of luxury, an optional seating package offers reclining captain's chairs equipped with heating, cooling, and massage features, making every passenger feel like a VIP. The second-row seat can rotate to face the rear, and these seats come as standard.

If you are simply carpooling, the second row includes individual captain's chairs as standard, complemented by stylish airline trays attached to the front seats, perfect for drawing or working on a laptop when adults are aboard.

A button in the B-pillar or on the front centre console effortlessly opens or closes both sliding doors. Ideal for your homework or lunch!

You have the option of a three-seater "comfort bunk" in the second row (which still provides three individual seats) or two standard captain's chairs at no additional cost. Nappa leather upholstery comes standard, with colour choices of black, silk beige, and "artufo". Even if you choose the standard captain's seats, you won't feel deprived; they also recline and include ISOfix points for added safety.

Exploring the new V-Class

The V300d boasts a robust 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder turbodiesel engine that delivers a remarkable 174kW and 500Nm of torque. This powertrain strikes a perfect balance between efficiency and performance, making it ideal for navigating city streets as well as embarking on long journeys.

It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 7.8 seconds.

Mercedes' "Agility Control" suspension system significantly improves ride comfort by adapting to various road conditions. This feature guarantees a smooth driving experience, no matter how rough the terrain, and the vehicle's weight is only noticeable during severe braking.

Moreover, the van's compact turning radius makes maneuvering in tight spots surprisingly effortless, even in the bustling streets and parking areas of Cape Town.

The Exclusive model comes equipped with an array of advanced driving aids and safety features as standard. The system's sudden halt upon detecting two pedestrians on the roadside surprised me.

While reversing into a parking space, it also identified an obstacle that wasn’t actually in the way and applied the brakes forcefully. For unsettling sensitivity, you can deactivate or adjust its responsiveness. The MBUX interior assistant also chimes in from time to time, offering help during casual conversations with your passenger.

Fuel efficiency is impressive for its category, with combined consumption figures ranging from about 8,8 to 9 litres per 100 kilometres, based on our launch route that included both highway and urban driving.

Pricing overview

The new V-Class V300d Exclusive starts at R2 267 000 (US$125 330).

Since the local official Mercedes Benz distributor does not readily offer the V Class, I have provided you with the South African price.

They may import it for you upon special request. This price point showcases the premium materials and the comprehensive array of standard features that define this luxury van. Upon reviewing the price list, it appears that the only optional upgrades available are the luxurious second-row seats, priced at R95 805 (US$5 293) each.

Should the brand have considered a more accessible pricing strategy to allow for personalised options? Not everyone may be interested in advanced features like adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assistance, or a heated steering wheel. It is unclear how many local buyers will opt for these advanced features.

My decision

The V-Class is more than just a mode of transport; it embodies a lifestyle choice. Whether you are shuttling important clients to vital meetings or embarking on extravagant family vacations, the V300d Exclusive promises an exceptional experience, ensuring that every passenger travels in supreme comfort. Driving this vehicle is truly a pleasure.
