Motoring: Audi Q8 is a winner

The experience of seeing an Audi Q8 for the first time was surreal. Its size, which seems smaller in images, is the first thing that catches your eye.

THE one constant in life is change, and that is sure to happen as time passes. Styles come and go, from music to clothes to automobiles —even SUVs are becoming obsolete.

Therefore, now more than ever, there is a need for uniqueness in cars as the moneyed want to make a statement with their SUVs. This is the perfect scenario for unique sporty SUVs.

The BMW X6 and the Mercedes-GLE Coupe are two such examples; they combine the practicality and utility of an SUV with the athleticism of a coupe.

Even in their next generations, BMW and Mercedes will be offering facelifts, so this is not a brand-new market. The fact that there is a competitor, who has never experienced something like this makes it all the more intriguing.

The Audi Q8 is here. It is Audi's first foray into a thoroughbred sports SUV, and the news that I would be among the first in the nation to go behind the wheel of their newest vehicle filled me with anticipation.

Exterior

The experience of seeing an Audi Q8 for the first time was surreal. Its size, which seems smaller in images, is the first thing that catches your eye.

For a sporty SUV, the Q8 has all the right proportions: long, low, and broad. The fact that the Q8's proportions did not sacrifice any of its functionality is what really sold it to me. Boot space and back headroom are not compromised for aesthetics due to the mildly sloping rear, in contrast to rival models, which benefit both parties.

Interior

No one manufactures better interiors than Audi, I keep saying. Without a doubt, they are industry leaders.

Getting behind the wheel was a whole new adventure. First, you will see what is occurring in the virtual cockpit, and then you will be directed to the two massive displays up front.

The Q8's interior is as refined and solid as one would expect from an Audi. The panels are precisely aligned, and the materials are of high quality.

The basic features of the base model, include a panoramic sunroof and heated front seats, but it lacks expensive amenities like four-zone temperature control and a leather dashboard with contrast stitching.

Front massaging chairs, improved leather surfaces, and quieter dual-pane glass are exclusive to the top-tier model. That was in addition to the head-up display and adjustable ambient interior lighting that were standard in my test car. In addition to its stunning good looks, the Q8 offers enough room for passengers.

Even at this height, the driving position is sporty, and the backseat can accommodate two people who want to stretch out. I jammed four big suitcases into the backseat of the two-row Q8, despite the fact that its load capacity is lower than that of the three-row Q7.

When the rear bench splits in half, it folds almost flat, increasing that number to 23 — two less than in the Q7. The optional air suspension, which my test car had, allows you to lower the rear end, making it easier to load and unload baggage.

The Q8 features a little storage space within.

There were not many places to put little things because of the short center-console bin and the narrow door pockets.

The state-of-the-art infotainment system is standard on every Q8, and it has two vibrant touchscreens that are incorporated into the dashboard and centre console.

With haptic feedback, the screens react to touch inputs, replacing the more natural rotary controller used on previous Audi models.

Distractions were inevitable, but I soon adjusted to the system's sensible menus and big symbols. Alternate options are available via helpful voice instructions and controls mounted on the steering wheel, which is a relief. An integrated Wi-Fi hotspot, as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, are standard features. You have the choice of two separate Bang & Olufsen audio systems and wireless charging.

Because of its customisable settings and excellent navigation, I really like the basic digital gauge cluster, which is named Virtual Cockpit.

Performance

The 55 TFSI Audi Q8 is a joy to drive. It has a mild hybrid 3.0-litre turbocharged gasoline V6 engine that can put out 250 kW of power and 500 Nm of torque; a 48V motor takes over power when coasting, starting, and stopping the vehicle.

The Q8 can be propelled with no effort thanks to the engine's power, which is rather lacking at lower rpm. To awaken the dragon, go to Dynamic Mode.

When you shift into beast mode, the exhaust sound grows deeper, the adaptive air suspension drops the vehicle 90 mm, and the interior lights glow red.

Put the showmanship of the Q8 aside; its intended character is that of a calm and collected road warrior. As you drive thousands of kilometres at a time in Comfort Mode, with adaptive cruise control turned on and your favourite music played in ultra-clarity specifically for you, it is the kind of automobile you desire. Immerse yourself in pure luxury as you access cutting-edge technology.

My decision

The Audi Q8 comes out on top, in my opinion. It possesses every characteristic of the preeminent SUV on the market, and not just because four out of every five onlookers either stare at it intently or give you the thumbs up.

There is no denying the Audi Q8's X Factor. It has the looks, interior, technology, and engine choices to make any buyer happy.

One model that stands out when it comes to performance is the SQ8.
