A BULAWAYO traffic police officer, who allegedly demanded a US$30 as fine, but failed to receipt the money, appeared at Tredgold Magistrates Court facing a criminal abuse of office charge.
Memory Sayi (38) pleaded not guilty to the charge and was remanded on US$100 bail.
According to court papers, on May 20, Sayi, who was in the company of a colleague, came across the complainant, Donald Muchemi, who was driving a commuter omnibus.
It is alleged that Muchemi dropped off passengers at an undesignated point, leading to his arrest.
The two police officers then escorted the complainant to Bulawayo Traffic office, where he was supposed to pay a fine for his offence.
It is reported that Sayi informed Muchemi that he was supposed to pay US$160, but allegedly coerced him to bribe her with US$30 instead.
Muchemi later informed the owner of the commuter omnibus of the offence before filing a police report.
After discovering that Muchemi had informed the police, Sayi allegedly receipted the US$30 and forged Muchemi’s signature.
