POLICE in Gokwe have banned the carrying of machetes and other dangerous weapons to curb rising cases of murder, particularly those involving crimes of passion, Southern Eye has established.
Officer commanding Gokwe district Chief Superintendent Tsitsi Chikono yesterday said the ban was effective for three months.
“Due to a rise in crimes of passion and use of weapons, the carrying in public whether openly or by concealment in a public place or public thoroughfare or public display of any of the following weapons; catapults, machetes, axes, knobkerries, swords, stones, knives, spears (and) any traditional weapon whatsoever is looking likely to occasion public disorder or a breach of peace, hereby issue an order prohibiting the carrying of such weapons in Gokwe district or part thereof for a period not exceeding three months that is from July 22 to October 22, 2024,” she said.
Chikono urged the public to desist from carrying such weapons during the said period to avoid being arrested.
Gokwe has been recording rising cases of domestic violence that usually end up in murder.
In 2022, police in Gokwe issued a similar ban on the carrying of dangerous weapons following a rise in crimes of passion in the district.
A number of areas in Midlands province have in the past months recorded increasing cases of murder committed through the use of dangerous weapons.
