High Court postpones CCC 77 bail hearing

They have been in remand prison since their arrest on June 16 this year.

THE High Court yesterday postponed the bail hearing of opposition Citizens Coalition for Change official Jameson Timba and 76 others to Tuesday next week while waiting for the transcript of proceedings from the lower courts.

The State said the transcript was yet to be released as the chief transcriber was seized with the typing of the document.

Timba and 76 CCC party activists were arrested last month for allegedly gathering with intent to promote violence.

They have been in remand prison since their arrest on June 16 this year.

Harare magistrate Ruth Moyo denied the activists bail after ruling that they are a security threat hence they are not suitable candidates.

The activists were arrested while commemorating the Day of the African Child, according to party officials.

The State alleged that the police got a tip-off that the accused persons were holding an unsanctioned gathering for the purposes of engaging in an unlawful demonstration in Harare.

The court heard that there were skirmishes at the scene as the accused resisted arrest and fought back, resulting in two of them being injured.

However, the activists claimed that  police used brute force, including tear gas, to arrest them.

One of the accused persons lost a child while in custody and the authorities did not to allow her to attend her child’s funeral.

Another activist reportedly broke his leg as a result of the assault by the police.
