THE Zimbabwe Miners Federation’s (ZMF) annual general meeting (AGM) kicks off in the capital today with Mines and Mining Development minister Winstone Chitando as the guest speaker.
The two-day indaba is being held under the theme, Sustainable Mining: A Catalyst towards National Development. It ends tomorrow.
In an interview with NewsDay yesterday, ZMF president Henrietta Rushwaya said they were expecting representatives from all the provinces of the country to share ideas and experiences in the mining sector.
“We are having our annual general meeting starting on 11th to 12th at Harare Hippodrome in Braeside, Harare where Minister Chitando is set to address guests,” she said.
“We are enforcing a zero-tolerance policy against environmental degradation that includes deforestation, habitat destruction, pollution, soil erosion, human-wildlife conflict and biodiversity loss.”
Rushwaya said collaboration was needed to ensure mining contributes positively to national development while safeguarding Zimbabwe’s natural resources.
Government has urged gold miners to increase output to support the recently-launched Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG) currency that was introduced in April this year.
ZiG is backed by gold and cash reserves. It’s the nation’s sixth attempt to have a functioning local currency in 15 years.
