Two fishermen drown in Lake Kariba

The incident happened between Fothergill and Nyaodza fishing camps.

TWO fishermen drowned while fishing in Lake Kariba yesterday, NewsDay has established.

The incident happened between Fothergill and Nyaodza fishing camps.

The two are believed to have been intoxicated when their boat capsized.

Search parties have been dispatched, with rangers from the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority joining the team in a bid to recover the bodies of the fishermen.

Inland and Waters Department Lake captain Adan Nyekete yesterday confirmed the incident.

“It’s such a terrible situation. These men went out fishing, but from the looks of it, they may have been drunk,” Nyekete said.

A local fisherman, James Siachikalanga, who operates at Nyaodza Fishing Camp, expressed shock over the tragic incident.

"It’s hard to believe that my fellow fishermen have died. We have been together for years in this industry and they will sadly be missed,” he said.

By yesterday, the bodies of the fishermen were still to be retrieved.
