Chibuku Road to Fame in grand finale

Delta Corporation marketing director Irimayi Muzorewa said the Chibuku Road to Fame promotion continues to explore and discover talent.

ALL is set for budding musicians from the country’s 10 provinces to battle it out at the annual Chibuku Road to Fame national finals set for Takashinga Cricket Club in Highfield, Harare.

At the grand finale tomorrow the ultimate winners are set to land a US$15 000 cash prize and a lucrative recording contract for their debut album.

The second and third-placed groups will pocket US$10 000 and US$7 000, respectively.

Delta Corporation marketing director Irimayi Muzorewa said the Chibuku Road to Fame promotion continues to explore and discover talent.

“The Chibuku brand continues to leverage on music and dance to deliver its core purpose of nourishing the bonds of brotherhood among its consumers, who have a strong appreciation for music,” he noted.

Launched in 2001, the Chibuku Road to Fame music competition is aimed at developing music from grassroots level.

Organised by  the arts mother body, National Arts Council of Zimbabwe and sponsored by Delta Beverages through their Chibuku brand, the competition is the country’s largest grassroots talent identification programme.

The competitions start at provincial level and winners from the country’s 10 provinces compete at national level for a monetary prize, plus a fully-paid-for recording contract.

To date, sungura musician Romeo Gasa, who fronts Extra Valembe, remains a notable product of the Chibuku Road to Fame  programme after winning the competition in 2007.

This year’s provincial competitions, which marked the beginning of the road to fame for participants, kicked off on September 9 under the theme Imba Tinzwe, Cula Sizwe Super Star.

Mashonaland East province will be represented by Famous Mighty Boys (Zim dancehall) while Midlands province has 911, an Afro-jazz band as its representative.

Afro-fusion band Hi-Five will be out to represent Mashonaland Central with Deze raWasu Mbira music are carrying the hopes of Manicaland province.

Another Afro- fusion and sungura outfit Kweseka and Gutu Stars will battle for honours representing Matabeleland North and Masvingo province respectively. 

The host province, Harare, will be represented by an Afro Fusion band Mazwi while sungura band Ziyaduma Express will stand in for Matabeleland South.

Mashonaland West will be represented at the competitions by Visionaries, a jazz band from Chegutu District while Afro Jazz outfit The Royal Band will be out to fight for Bulawayo province honours.

A star-studded line-up of veteran musicians, among them sungura kingpin, dancehall chanters Tocky Vibes, Jah Master and songbird Feli Nandi will take turns to entertain revellers as guest artistes.

Also, to perform are dancehall singers Ndunge Yut, Pumacol, Bazooker, Grade 2D band alongside DJ Fantan and Levels of Chillspot family.
