A MAN from Mphoengs in Matabeleland South province has been sentenced to 15 months in jail for assaulting a police officer to stop him from arresting a suspected criminal.

Tshebukani Ndebele was convicted and sentenced by Plumtree magistrate Joshua Nembaware on Tuesday.

Nembaware, however, conditionally suspended nine months of his sentence.

Prosecutor Selestine Madziwa told the court that on June 2, the cop Arther Mupfeki received a report of malicious damage to property and went to apprehend the suspect.

When he was taking the suspect to the police vehicle, Ndebele pounced on the cop demanding the release of the suspect.

The suspect took advantage of the commotion and escaped.
