A SOUTH AFRICA-BASED mining company was defrauded of R440 000 by a suspected fraudster after attempting to acquire a motor vehicle.
Harare magistrate Stranley Mambanje yesterday remanded Calton Mudiwiwa (39) out of custody to July 26 for routine remand pending finalisation of investigations.
The complainant in this case is Davure Mining, represented by its manager Masimba Mukarati.
Davure Mining is a holding company, which has its subsidiaries in South Africa and Zimbabwe and has interests in mining, cattle ranching and agriculture.
The court heard that on October 20, 2021, Mukarati wanted to acquire a Toyota Hilux Legend 50 double-cab from South Africa and he shared the information with Mudiwiwa, who subsequently volunteered to assist him to import the vehicle.
Davure Mining had free funds in its South Africa FNB Bank account and paid the vehicle price to Wish Worthy Investments on the instruction of Mudiwiwa.
After the payment, Mukarati reportedly availed proof of payment to Mudiwiwa for ease of reference, but the latter allegedly failed to import the vehicle.
Mudiwiwa started giving false promises and later became evasive, the prosecution alleged.
