Ethno Zim empowers youths

Music Crossroads Zimbabwe Trust director Melody Zambuko told NewsDay Life & Style that the programme is a global event for folk and traditional music meant for musicians aged between 16 and 30 years.

ORGANISERS of Ethno Zimbabwe, a programme by Music Crossroads Academy Zimbabwe and Jeunesses Musicales Global (JMG) which roared to life on Sunday, say they have lined up a series of concerts at different venues around Harare.

The event will have workshops at Coghlan Villa Guest House in Greendale, Harare, while the curtain will come down on September 21 with a concert set for Alliance Française in Harare.

Music Crossroads Zimbabwe Trust director Melody Zambuko told NewsDay Life & Style that the programme is a global event for folk and traditional music meant for musicians aged between 16 and 30 years.

“Ethno Zimbabwe programme is a series of annual international music camps, workshops and concerts that promote peace, tolerance and understanding. The programme draws participants from Malawi, Zimbabwe, Chile, Tanzania, South Africa and Mozambique,” she said.

“The event takes a democratic peer-to-peer learning approach whereby young people teach each other music from their traditions.

“It is a non-formal pedagogy that has been refined over the past 30 years, embracing the principles of intercultural dialogue and understanding.”

Zambuko said the country’s cultural diversity and the hospitality of its people led to different African countries endorsing them as the hosts.

“The event showcases different ethnic tribes and participants from around the world come together and share cultures, teach each other their own ways in as far as music is concerned,” she noted.

“The programme will be highly supported with communication technology and, therefore, we will get to know and see more than we usually get briefed at the event.”

The event provides a unique opportunity for young people from across the globe to come together and democratically engage through music in a manner that is characterised by respect, generosity and openness.
