NAC has sponsored the tournament since 2018 as part of their initiatives to sensitise women about the need to utilise HIV and Covid-19 testing and cervical cancer screening.

THE National Aids Council (NAC) have extended their sponsorship of local golf after being confirmed as the title sponsors of the Zimbabwe Ladies Golf Open Strokeplay Championship for the fourth year running.

NAC has sponsored the tournament since 2018 as part of their initiatives to sensitise women about the need to utilise HIV and Covid-19 testing and cervical cancer screening.

Cervical cancer accounts for more than 33% of cancer cases in Zimbabwe with over 7 000 cases being recorded annually.

Yesterday, NAC in partnership with Diagnostic Laboratory Suppliers unveiled a US$34 000 sponsorship package for this year’s edition of the Zimbabwe Ladies Golf Open Strokeplay Championship set for Royal Harare Golf Club from July 15 to 17.

The tournament is set to attract the crème de la crème of local ladies’ golf with other participants expected from outside the country.

NAC chief executive officer Bernard Madzima said he was hopeful that the financial injection will help raise the standard of play in the tournament.

“The sponsorship is made up of contributions by NAC (US$18 000) and Diagnostic Laboratory Supplier (US$16 000). I hope it will motivate the players to give their all and make the tournament the greatest,” Madzima said.

“In addition to vital HIV and cancer prevention management information, we will also be offering HIV tests, cancer screening and Covid-19 screening during the tournament. I, therefore, hope to see lots of women attending and in the process access and utilise our on-site services.”

Diagnostics Laboratory Suppliers managing director Edgar Chandiwana said: “We would like to thank ZLGU for giving us this opportunity as we are working with them to create awareness on the importance of HIV screening and the early detection of cervical cancer.”

ZLGU president Margaret Vera lauded NAC and Diagnostics Laboratory Suppliers for their continued support for ladies’ golf and their efforts to raise awareness around HIV, cervical cancer and other related emergencies.
